What is the Christmas Dice Game?

I figure this could be helpful information. The Christmas dice game is a holiday activity where everyone starts out with a present, and then they take turns rolling dice that have instructions, such as swapping with the person to your left. You go through the game, swapping presents with everyone until the game is over.

Then you get to keep the present that you still have! This game is loads of fun because everyone gets a present, and it’s simple enough for people of all ages to enjoy. So why don’t we get into the specifics?

How to Play the Christmas Dice Game

The Christmas dice game is actually super simple once you get the hang of it. First things first, before your get-together, you need to let everyone know that they need to bring a gift. Decide on a price range together that everyone has to stick to. The goal is that there should be one present for every person that is present. Get it…like present the gift and present the attendance?

Okay, sorry, carrying on. Now that everyone is here with their presents put them into a pile in the middle of the floor or the table. This is going to be where you start the game.

Step One: Hand Out Presents

Step One: Hand Out Presents

Make sure everyone pulls from the pile of presents so that no one is left empty-handed. You get to decide who is going to be the first person to roll the dice to kick things off. You are only going to need one of the two dice since everyone has one present.

When the first person rolls the dice, depending on what it lands on, they are going to switch gifts with someone or unwrap their gift, or a mix of the two. Now is a good time to talk dice numbers.

  • Roll a One: You have to swap with the person to your right.
  • Roll a Two: You have to swap with the person to your left.
  • Roll a three: Swap gifts with a person in the circle of your choosing and open the present.
  • Roll a Four: Swap gifts with a person in the circle of your choosing and open the present.
  • Roll a Five: Unwrap the gift in your hands.
  • Roll a Six: Unwrap the gift in your hands.

Step Two: Keep Playing

So the first few rounds, everyone is safe. But once most of the presents are unwrapped, things get tricky. If you roll an action that you cannot do, like unwrap a present that is already unwrapped, then you are out of the game. But you get to keep that present! So you aren’t losing too much.

When the majority of the presents are unwrapped is also an extra fun time because you get to see the present you want to take and then hope that you’ll be able to steal it.

When I played this game last, someone surprised everyone by putting one hundred dollars in when the limit was 25, so yeah…you can say I had my eyes on that gift. I think everyone in the room did. My 7-year-old sister ended up getting it, figures.

Step Three: End the Game

This game only ends once all of the presents are unwrapped. Otherwise, it could go on forever, and who wants that? The entire time you are playing, you will be watching the wrapped presents dwindle and get smaller, sweating as they go along. Hopefully, you get to keep the one that you have your heart set on. But if you don’t, there is nothing you can do. That’s all part of the game.

Trust me; this part hurts if you end up with something you didn’t want. But if you are like my little sister, you could also walk off $100 dollars richer, so it’s a game of luck.

The whole point of the game is to have fun. Plus, the good news is all of the gifts should be of equal value, so you won’t be missing out on anything too crazy. This game is a blast to play with your whole family, and you get to open a present early. It’s an absolute win-win.
