How to Play the Bottle Flip Game
Playing the water bottle flip game or doing the bottle flip challenge is very simple. Well, it’s easy to set up, I should say – it might take you a few tries to get the hang of flipping the bottle.
All you need to play the bottle flip game is at least one plastic water bottle (the disposable kind, not your beloved Hydro Flask or Stanley Cup), some liquid, and a flat surface. That’s it!
Ideally, you should have several water bottles so more than one person can play at a time, and there are a few other items you could throw into the mix to make the game a little more interesting. But, if you have just one half-empty water bottle, that’s enough to play the game.
Here’s how to play:
- Take a water bottle and fill it about 1/3 full with liquid. Seal the lid closed tightly!
- Pick up the bottle and hold it by the top (not just the lid, but the top part of the bottle).
- Use your wrist to flip the water bottle.
- Keep practicing and playing until the water bottle does a full rotation and lands upright again!
That’s all there is to it! See, I told you the bottle flip game was super easy.
Bottle Flipping Game Ideas
There are lots of variations of the bottle flip game to mix it up. Here are a few of the best ideas I found to make the game even more fun and challenging.
1. Organize a cleanup
Organize a beach or park cleanup to launch your water bottle game. Give everyone bags for trash and recycling, and make it a fun competition to see who can collect the most litter. Provide everyone with (fresh) water bottles to drink while they clean up, then play the flip game at the end!
2. Flip the bottle to land on its cap
Start with the bottle balanced on its cap and try flipping it so it lands standing on the lid again. This one is really tough!
3. Double flip
Once you’ve got a single flip mastered, see if you can get the bottle to rotate multiple times before landing upright.
4. Flips in a row
See how many bottles you can flip in a row – either line up multiple bottles and time how many you can flip in one minute, or just see how many times you can get a single bottle to land correctly without falling.
5. High ledge
Start with your bottle on the table in front of you, then try to flip it so it lands on a higher or lower flat surface.
6. Target practice
Try to make the bottle land on a target, such as a specific point on the table marked with tape.
7. Different colored liquids
To make this game more fun for kids, use food coloring to fill the bottles with different colored water. Predict which color will flip the best, or assign points to flipping the different colors successfully.
8. Different types of liquid
The bottle flip game is best played with water, but have fun experimenting with different types of liquid – soda, laundry detergent, etc. – to see if that makes flipping the bottle any different.
9. Drinking game
Of course, if you’re playing with adults age 21+, you could always turn the bottle flip game into a drinking game. Have everyone try to flip a bottle at the same time (a water bottle – no glass beer bottles for flipping!). Whoever doesn’t land their bottle has to take a sip of their drink, until everyone lands their bottle successfully.
10. Spin the bottle
Another fun version for adults – spin the bottle but you only kiss if the spinner (or the person it lands on) can flip the bottle first!
Bottle Game Prizes
If you’re going to have a competition playing the bottle flip game, you might as well reward the winner(s) with some fun prizes! Here are my favorite ideas for what to give the bottle-flipping champion.
- Stanley Cup: There’s a reason these cups are so popular – check out all the cool colors and size options!
- Stanley Cup dupe: If you don’t buy the Stanley Cup hype, here’s a more affordable option with a similar look.
- Hydro Flask: Another super popular style of water bottle.
- Hydro Flask dupe: If you don’t want to invest in the brand name, here’s a convincing dupe.
- Bedazzled bottle: I would be THRILLED to win this sparkly tumbler.
- Fun drinks: a 6-pack of craft beer or Harry Potter’s butterbeer (non-alcoholic) is sure to be a crowd-pleaser!
Pro Tip: The cup prizes are even better if you fill them with fun items like candy or a coffee shop gift card!
