Inside: Virtual Party Games – BYOW Bring You Own Wifi.
I love a good party and I love, love, LOVE a good game night – always! And we are not going to let this quarantine stop any of the fun! The concept of the “Virtual Party” has been all the rage lately because it’s a fun way to enjoy the company of friends while social distancing.
A virtual party is meant to be just like a traditional live party, but it is instead hosted on an online platform such as Zoom, Facebook Messenger, or the HouseParty app. Virtual Parties can be for both kids and adults alike, although typically, the adult version of a virtual party is referred to as a “Virtual Happy Hour” because, well, just add alcohol.
We also love celebrating birthdays with some of these virtual birthday party games. The possibilities are endless. As virtual get-togethers have become our new normal, it’s easier than ever to find lively virtual party games that can transform a video call into a fun-filled celebration.
Here are a few of our favorite Virtual Party Games to play online.
Table of Contents
Social Distance Friendly Fun
Truth or Dare: Same ole game we know and love. Tried and True.
2 Truths and a Lie: This one is often a great icebreaker for any gathering and it’s no different for your virtual party. Each person states 2 true things about them and one (believable) lie. Others have to try and guess which one is the lie.
Cards Against Humanity: If your Zoom call is adults-only, then try a game like Cards Against Humanity. PlayingCards.io made a free version called Remote Insensitivity that allows you to play on your phone while you video chat on the computer, it is one of the best virtual party games apps. Simply text everyone the link to your personal game room and you’re ready to go.
Bingo: It doesn’t get any easier than Bingo. You can use a website like My Free Bingo Cards to play a traditional game with a virtual caller, or you can play a custom Bingo game that revolves around a movie or TV show that your group plans to watch. Don’t forget to make small fun prizes, like an IOU for a cocktail or a gift card for takeout.
Virtual Party Game Ideas
Bomb: We hadn’t played this game until recently, but once we did, we knew it was making our virtual party games list. It’s very simple and can be easily played at your next virtual gathering. Here’s how it works: one person names a movie, then the next person must name an actor from that movie, then the next person must name a movie with that actor…and so on.
Rules: You cannot repeat any movie titles or actors during a specific round. And if you can’t name the next person or movie, you get a letter. If you get enough letters to spell out BOMB, you lose. Now if you’re the last person standing, you win.
Most Likely Too: This drinking game is a fun way to get to know your friends. Pose different “most likely to” scenarios — for example, “most likely to go skydiving” or “most likely to own a zoo” — and decide which friend would be most likely to do that thing. Whoever it is has to drink. You can find a big list of free questions here.
Trivia Night: Don’t let those trivia skills fall by the wayside! You can still practice them while social distancing. To play trivia on Zoom, open this random trivia generator and start asking questions.
BYOW: Bring Your Own Wifi Virtual Party Games
What’s In Your Room: This is a play on the traditional shower game “What’s in your Purse” where you assign a point value to some of the most common to most random items a person can have on them. For a virtual party game, you can ask all of your guests to attend from one particular room in their house and call out items for them to find nearby. For example, if the virtual party is taking place in the living room, you can task your guests with finding a set of keys for 1 point, a candle for 3 points, and something random such as a pair of tweezers for 5 points.
Pictionary: Pictionary is a classic game-night game, in part because the rules are so simple. To play, divide your group into teams. Open this Pictionary word generator and choose a team to play first, as well as a designated drawer on that team. The drawer generates a word and has one minute to draw that word for their team to guess. If the team guesses the card correctly, they get a point.
Read My Lips: This is actually an ideal game for a virtual party. The idea is just like it sounds. One person mouths a phrase and the other players have to guess what they said. This game often goes awry when playing in person, but for a virtual party, it’s easy for that person to just mute their screens and say the phrase. Have each person write down their answer rather than say it aloud for the most fun guesses!
